Measurement Specialties, Inc. (www.msiusa.com) is a designer and manufacturer of sensors and sensor-based consumer products. Measurement Specialties (MSI) produces a wide variety of sensors that use advanced technologies to measure precise ranges of physical characteristics, including pressure, motion, force, displacement, angle, flow, and distance.
In 2004, MSI identified a need for an integrated EDI solution that would automatically issue purchase orders and send advanced ship notices and invoices to several of its largest customer including Northern Tool, Sears and Target.
Several of MSI’s key customers were asking the company to trade using EDI. These requests launched a search for an EDI solution. They considered two options. The first was purchasing an EDI software package and managing the application in-house. The second was going with a hosted EDI service where a third party managed the entire environment and operations for a monthly service fee. After a thorough analysis, MSI determined that service option would result in a lower cost of ownership and by eliminating the need to develop an in-house expertise on EDI, the company could keep its technical resources focused on its core business.
The company selected SPS’ File Integration service to extend their new MANMAN system into a fully functional EDI trading system for use with their biggest customers. For its lower order volume customers, MSI will utilize SPS Commerce’s WebForms to exchange electronic information.
“SPS Commerce was the clear choice in our search for an EDI interface to our new business system. All of our major trading partners are already connected to SPS, and they were able to readily integrate with our new backend accounting system, offering a truly seamless transition for everyone involved. We will be more attractive to both existing and new retailers, while reaping the benefits of electronic commerce.”
